Whether you are an expat living in Nice or you have your trip booked for a visit, there are lots of things to do and see on the French Riviera this spring. From special deals and exhibitions around the city’s museums to festivals and sports events, there’s something going on for everybody in Nice this May.
The last month of spring kicks off in style in Nice this year as the French celebrate May Day. People gather in various locations across the city to sing, eat, drink, and dance around the May Pole. Almost everyone takes this day off to celebrate Labour Day, so expect all museums to be closed and buses and trams to take a well-deserved break.
Take a break from all the Labour Day festivities and head over the Jardins de Cimiez for Fete des Mais, the Nice folklore festival that kicks off on the first day of May and continues every Sunday of the month. This is an excellent way to enjoy centuries-old traditions such as dancing and animations, as well as an incredible selection of local food.
May is the traditional month for the Cannes Film Festival, and this year you can indulge in star-gazing and seeing some fantastic movies, complete with open-air screenings, between 17th and 28th May. Cannes is less than half an hour away from Nice, so if you have always wanted to be able to see the most famous actors in the world up-close, this is your chance.
La Nuit des Musees, which translates in English as “The Night of the Museums” takes place in mid-May in most of the museums in the city. Part of a Europe-wide festival that is in fourth year, this night is a special one for museum lovers, as all museums open their doors free of charge from 9pm to 11pm.
The world-famous Monaco Grand Prix takes place between 25th and 28th May and you can enjoy a free day if you do like the locals and head there the Friday before the big race. This way, you can enjoy the sensations, noise and smells without a ticket. Events included in the free day of 2017 include the Qualifying Time Trials for the Porsche Supercup and the first race of the GP2 series.
If Formula One is not your thing, head over to Baie des Anges, the port and the promenade for the TriMed regattas in mid-May. This sailing holiday is a feast for the eyes and a good excuse to try your hand at the helm of a wind boat.
There is something exciting happening in Nice and on the French Riviera every month, but May especially is packed full with lots of events. Look for apartments for sale in Nice and you’ll be able to enjoy all these events every year!
