The French Riviera is the most sought-after area in the world for luxury apartments and villas, blessed with three hundred days of sunshine per year, with a cool Mediterranean breeze and a clean blue sea. Originally the preserve of European royalty, the Cote d’Azur has retained its French charm, glorious sunshine and deserved prestige. The British aristocracy built many landmarks that still survive today: churches, hotels, apartment buildings, villas and of course, the Promenade des Anglais. Similarly, the Russian influence can be felt through the Russian church in the Tzarevich neighbourhood.

Nice’s international airport is the second largest in France, serving destinations such as Dublin, London, New York, Moscow and the Middle East. Almost all of the major destinations for luxury property are between fifteen and forty minutes’ drive from there.

St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is home to some of the most prestigious and luxurious villas in the world. Properties on this peninsula are of a very high standard, with swimming pools, manicured gardens and open sea views as the norm. The seclusion and privacy of villas in this area appeals to those who want to be away from it all – an oasis of calm off the tourist trail.

Cannes is an ultra-chic town thirty minutes west of Nice airport. Famed for its film festival, which has attracted celebrities and socialites for decades, La Croisette is the famous seafront with glamorous hotels and penthouse apartments. Shopping is excellent for top-of-the-range brands such as Rolls Royce and Rolex, while the traditional markets retain their allure for visitors. Villas in the Cannes area are mostly found in Le Cannet and Super Cannes, where breath-taking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Lerins Islands can be enjoyed.

Juan-les-Pins is a trendy town close to Antibes that draws crowds and top performers every year for its celebrated Jazz Festival. Frank Jay Gould, son of American tycoon Jay Gould, saw the potential of this beautiful village and built the Provencal Hotel, one of the most beautiful hotels in the world in its day. Poor management resulted in its closure but it was bought in 2007 by an English businessman who plans to turn it into luxury apartments.

Villefranche-sur-mer is a small village to the east of Nice with a beautiful beach, charming Old Town and typical Provencal-style property. The port, the citadelle and the gentle curve of the coast all contribute to the beauty of the village, which dates back to 130 BC. Past residents included the Rolling Stones, while Elton John’s villa on Mont Boron in Nice enjoys views of Villefranche bay. Villa Leopolda, a former residence of King Leopold II, is a fine example of the opulence that residents of this town exhibited in building their villas.
